The Sydney Roosters survived a stunning Newcastle Knights fightback to claim the 2026 NRL premiership. They edged Newcastle 19-18 in a dramatic Grand Final at Stadium Australia.
This memorable victory caps a tense title decider, showcasing the Roosters’ resolve as the final minutes determined the outcome at Stadium Australia and confirmed the club as premier for 2026.
The Knights looked set for one of rugby league’s great fairy tale seasons after a 12-0 lead.
However, the Sydney Roosters turned the game around after halftime, delivering a second half to reclaim the premiership since 2019.
Mark Nawaqanitawase was at the center of the Sydney Roosters’ comeback, scoring twice to keep them within reach.
Additionally, he delivered another crucial try in the second half.
The Roosters then turned the pressure into points, with Daly Cherry-Evans landing a field goal with 10 minutes remaining to push the score to 19-12.
That one point play proved decisive.
Newcastle refused to go away, with Greg Marzhew crossing with just three minutes remaining to bring the Knights within a point. But the Roosters held their nerve through the final stages to secure their 16th premiership.
Kalyn Ponga was outstanding for Newcastle as the Knights defended desperately for long periods, but ultimately couldn’t withstand the Roosters’ second half pressure.
For Newcastle, the result ends a remarkable season. After finishing with the wooden spoon in 2025, the Knights stormed into the finals from seventh position before reaching their first NRL Grand Final since 2001.
For the Roosters, it is another chapter in the club’s proud history and an unforgettable night as they completed an NRL and NRLW premiership double.
Earlier in the day, the Roosters defeated the Brisbane Broncos 30-6 in the NRLW Grand Final, with Brydie Parker scoring a hat-trick and Tarryn Aiken claiming the Karyn Murphy Medal.
The Roosters now finish 2026 as champions in both competitions.
