Former Wimbledon champion Markéta Vondroušová has been handed a four year suspension after an independent tribunal ruled she refused to comply with an out of competition anti doping test.

The Czech star, who made history by winning the 2023 Wimbledon title as the first unseeded women’s singles champion, will be ineligible to compete until June 2030 after the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) upheld the charge.

According to the ITIA’s findings, a doping control officer arrived at Vondroušová’s Prague residence in December 2025 to conduct a random test. Although the visit occurred outside her nominated one hour availability window, anti doping officials are permitted to conduct testing at any reasonable time.

The tribunal found that Vondroušová refused to provide a sample, an offence that carries the same penalty as testing positive for a banned substance under anti-doping regulations.

Documents released as part of the case included messages Vondroušová sent during the incident, showing her frustration as officials attempted to carry out the test.

The texts have attracted significant attention, but the tribunal’s decision ultimately centred on her refusal to submit to testing rather than the messages themselves.

The former world No. 6 has strongly denied using performance enhancing drugs, insisting her decision was driven by safety concerns and severe stress after an unexpected evening visit to her home.

She also pointed to her clean testing history and says she intends to appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The four year suspension sidelines one of the biggest names in women’s tennis and will keep the former Wimbledon champion out of all ITIA-sanctioned events until mid-2030 unless her appeal is successful.

The case has reignited debate around tennis’ anti doping procedures and the responsibilities athletes face when selected for out of competition testing.
