The Pittsburgh Pirates have strengthened their bullpen ahead of the MLB trade deadline, acquiring right handed reliever Camilo Doval from the New York Yankees in exchange for catching prospect Omar Alfonzo and outfield prospect Luis Cruz.

Doval arrives in Pittsburgh looking for a fresh start after an inconsistent stint in New York. The 29 year old posted a 4.54 ERA across 44 appearances this season, recording one save while struggling to lock down a permanent late inning role. Despite the numbers, his elite fastball velocity and swing and miss potential continue to make him one of baseball’s most intriguing relief arms.

Before joining the Yankees in 2025, Doval established himself as one of the National League’s premier closers with the San Francisco Giants. He earned All Star honours in 2023 and led the National League with 39 saves, showcasing the dominant stuff that Pittsburgh hopes it can help rediscover.

For the Pirates, the move represents a relatively low-risk gamble with significant upside. Pittsburgh has been searching for bullpen reinforcements as it continues its push to remain in the postseason race, and a return to form from Doval could provide a major boost in high-leverage situations.

The Yankees, meanwhile, opted to move on after Doval failed to consistently meet expectations following last year’s high profile acquisition from San Francisco. In return, New York adds 22 year old catcher Omar Alfonzo, who has spent the season at Double-A, along with 18-year-old outfielder Luis Cruz, a promising prospect from the Dominican Summer League.

While Doval’s tenure in New York ultimately fell short of expectations, the Pirates are betting that a change of scenery can unlock the form that once made him one of baseball’s elite closers. With the trade deadline approaching, Pittsburgh has made its first significant move and one that could pay dividends if Doval rediscovers his dominant arsenal.
