F1 Malaysia Recap
Max Verstappen has finally returned to the top step of the Formula 1 podium.
He won a chaotic and rain affected Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, part of F1 Malaysia.
The Red Bull driver converted pole position into victory on Sunday, claiming his first win of the 2026 season.
The race was dramatic, delayed by heavy rain, with tyre strategies, Safety Car periods, and a retirement for George Russell.
Antonelli finished second for Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton completed the podium for Ferrari after producing a remarkable recovery drive.
This result gives Verstappen and Red Bull their first Grand Prix victory of the 2026 campaign.
Heavy Rain Delays the Start
The Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, part of F1 Malaysia, was scheduled to take place at Sepang.
Consequently, the circuit would host relocated event after Bahrain was unable to stage the race in usual location.
Heavy rain caused significant disruption before the start.
Standing water left conditions too dangerous for the race to begin as scheduled.
The start procedure was subsequently suspended after several drivers struggled during the formation lap. Consequently, this created an unusual opening to the Grand Prix.
As the race finally got underway, drivers faced slippery and mixed conditions.
However, teams were split between intermediate and slick tires.
Verstappen Loses the Lead — Then Gets It Back
Verstappen started from pole but immediately found himself under pressure.
Kimi Antonelli and George Russell passed the Dutchman on the run down to Turn 1.
All three drivers initially ran intermediate tires.
Nevertheless, rather than allowing the Mercedes drivers to escape, Verstappen remained in contention and soon began to regain ground.
The first Safety Car was triggered after Valtteri Bottas spun.
Consequently, this created an important strategic window for drivers who had started on intermediates to switch to slick tires.
As the track dried, those who bet on slicks faced a significant disadvantage.
They lost ground in the early stages.
Verstappen used the changing conditions to his advantage, eventually working his way back into the lead.
Red Bull Takes Control
Red Bull takes control.
Once Verstappen regained first place, the Red Bull driver began to establish control of the race.
Antonelli and Russell continued their battle behind him.
Verstappen maintained his advantage as the circuit evolved.
However, late Safety Car and Virtual Safety Car interruptions threatened to change the Grand Prix’s complexion.
Verstappen remained composed.
Crossing the finish line, the Dutchman was 2.307 seconds ahead of Antonelli, securing 25 championship points.
Hamilton Produces Stunning Recovery
Lewis Hamilton was one of the biggest stories of the race.
The Ferrari driver started on slick tires, he initially paid a heavy price as the wet conditions made the circuit extremely difficult.
Hamilton dropped as low as 18th position.
During the race, this happened.
However, as the track improved, the seven time World Champion began a remarkable recovery.
He moved through the field.
Hamilton eventually climbed all the way back to third, he secured his first podium of the race and gave Ferrari a double top four finish.
Charles Leclerc finished fourth, meaning both Ferrari drivers recovered strongly from their difficult starts.
Russell’s Late Heartbreak
George Russell looked set for another strong result before his race ended with just five laps remaining.
Mercedes had been running in the top three. His car slowed and eventually came to a stop on the start/finish straight behind the Safety Car.
An apparent power unit problem forced Russell into retirement.
The result was devastating for the British driver.
Consequently, he lost a potentially valuable haul of championship points.
His Mercedes team mate Antonelli finished second.
Russell’s retirement also gave Antonelli another major boost in the Drivers’ Championship. The Italian’s advantage over his team-mate now stands at 84 points.

A Race Unlike Any Other
The 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix was unlike a traditional Bahrain race.
The event did not take place under the usual desert conditions.
Consequently, it was held at Sepang in Malaysia after the race was relocated.
Earlier this year, Formula 1 and the FIA confirmed that Sepang would host the Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2-4. This preserves the event on the 2026 calendar.
Sepang’s tropical climate delivered exactly the weather uncertainty.
The circuit is famous for it.
Heavy rain delayed the start.
As a result, tire choices became crucial as changing conditions produced one of the season’s most unpredictable races.
Verstappen Is Back
Verstappen’s victory marks a major moment. It stands as a turning point in his 2026 campaign.
