Will Brown has returned to the top step of the podium. This ending a year long Supercars victory drought with a hard fought win in a blockbuster race at Queensland Raceway.
The 2024 Supercars champion delivered a determined drive in the opening race of the Ipswich Super440, with Brown making the most of a chaotic and strategic battle at the front of the field.
Matt Payne started from pole position, but the lead quickly changed hands when Brodie Kostecki made his move early in the race. Kostecki appeared to have control of the contest, while different tyre strategies added another layer of drama as Kai Allen briefly moved into contention after taking just two tyres during his pit stop.
But when the race reached its crucial stages, Brown was there to capitalise.
The Triple Eight driver powered his way through the field and ultimately broke through for a much needed victory. His first in 12 months.
The win was particularly significant after Brown and his team had recently been dealing with an engine performance deficit. After crossing the line, Brown made it clear just how much the result meant.
Brown’s dad also in tears as the emotion got the best of him with all of the extra attention on Brown’s season.
After a frustrating stretch without a race win, the former champion has reminded the field that he is still capable of taking on the sport’s best when the opportunity presents itself.
Brown was also emotional in his pit lane speech and pumped up. “Give us the same equipment and see what happens” Brown said in his pit lane speech.
For Kostecki, Payne and Allen, the Ipswich race was another example of just how competitive the Supercars field has become, with tyre strategy, pit stops and wheel to wheel racing all playing a major role in the final result.
But on Saturday at Queensland Raceway, the spotlight belonged to Will Brown.
After a year of waiting, he is finally back where he believes he belongs on top of the Supercars podium.
