The Los Angeles Dodgers have avoided a three game sweep at home after Teoscar Hernández delivered a dramatic two run walk off double to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3–2 on Thursday night.
The Cardinals took a 2–0 lead early, scoring runs in the first and third innings. The Dodgers eventually got on the board in the fifth when Tommy Edman scored on a wild pitch.
Los Angeles entered the ninth inning still trailing 2–1 and desperately needed a big hit.
With one out, Edman singled to left field and stole second base. Mookie Betts then drew a walk, putting runners on first and second for Hernández.
The Dodgers outfielder worked the count full against Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien before driving a sinker into the gap in left-centre field. Edman scored easily, while Betts raced home with the winning run to complete the 3–2 comeback victory.
The victory was particularly important for Los Angeles after the Dodgers had struggled to produce hits with runners in scoring position during the series. Hernández’s double was their only hit in that situation on Thursday.
Hernández finished the game with two hits and two RBIs, while Edman went 4 for 5 and scored twice. The Dodgers had six hits as a team.
Shohei Ohtani was not in the lineup, with the Dodgers giving him the night off as he dealt with neck, biceps and knee issues.
The win moved the Dodgers to 83–57, while the Cardinals fell to 70–71. St. Louis had won the first two games of the series but could not complete the sweep.
For Hernández, it was a timely reminder of the impact he can have in the biggest moments — and for the Dodgers, it was a much-needed victory as September baseball heats up.
