Stan Kroenke is adding Major League Baseball to his growing sports empire.
Kroenke Sports & Entertainment has reached an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Angels from longtime owner Arte Moreno, bringing an end to Moreno’s 23 year tenure with the franchise.
The deal is expected to be worth around $4 billion, according to multiple reports, which would make it the most expensive MLB franchise sale in history, surpassing the $3.9 billion sale of the San Diego Padres earlier this year. The exact financial terms have not been officially disclosed.
The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, pending customary closing conditions and approval from Major League Baseball.
The Angels will become the latest major franchise added to Kroenke’s already enormous sporting portfolio.
Kroenke Sports & Entertainment currently has interests including the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids and Arsenal of the English Premier League. Kroenke affiliated entities also developed SoFi Stadium and the surrounding Hollywood Park development in Inglewood.
The Angels acquisition now gives Kroenke a presence across another major American professional sports league.
For Angels fans, however, the focus will be much simpler: Can Kroenke turn the franchise around?
Moreno purchased the Angels in 2003 for approximately $183.5 million, shortly after the franchise won its first and only World Series championship.
His ownership began with a successful period, including five American League West titles between 2004 and 2009. However, the franchise’s fortunes dramatically changed over the following decade.
Despite having superstars such as Mike Trout and previously Shohei Ohtani, the Angels struggled to build a consistently competitive roster.
The team has endured an extended playoff drought and is heading toward its 12th consecutive season without a postseason appearance, according to current reporting.
Moreno had previously explored selling the franchise in 2022 before ultimately deciding to retain ownership.
This time, the sale is moving forward.
Kroenke’s arrival could represent one of the biggest turning points in Angels history.
The new ownership group inherits a franchise with a massive market, a passionate fan base and significant commercial potential but also plenty of work to do both on and off the field.
The Angels will need to improve their baseball operations, develop young talent and find a way to return to postseason contention.
There are also major questions surrounding the future of Angel Stadium and the franchise’s long term home.
Kroenke has already demonstrated his willingness to invest heavily in sports infrastructure and entertainment, most notably with the Rams and SoFi Stadium.
Now, he’ll have the opportunity to reshape the Angels.
One thing is certain: the Angels are entering a completely new era.
And at a reported $4 billion, Stan Kroenke’s first MLB franchise comes with enormous expectations.
