Melbourne Storm is entering a new chapter, with global investment organisation EQT set to become the club’s majority shareholder.

The move marks a significant change in the ownership structure of one of the NRL’s most successful clubs, although Storm has made it clear that the people currently leading the organisation will remain in place.

The transaction is still subject to approval from the Australian Rugby League Commission. Until the deal is completed, Melbourne Storm will continue operating under its existing ownership and leadership structure.

Storm said EQT was selected following a global process to find a strategic partner that shared the club’s vision for the future.

Founded in Sweden, EQT is a global investment organisation with operations in Australia and around the world. The company already has experience in the sporting sector through its ownership of IMG Academy, as well as partnerships across international sport.

The investment group says its experience in areas including athlete development, sports science, digital technology and data can help support the next stage of Melbourne Storm’s growth.

For Storm supporters, one of the biggest questions will be whether the new ownership structure changes the direction of the club.

Based on the information released so far, the key leadership positions will remain unchanged.

Matt Tripp will continue as chairman, while CEO Justin Rodski, head coach Craig Bellamy and director of football Frank Ponissi will remain in their respective roles.

EQT is expected to join Storm’s ownership group on the Board of Directors once the transaction receives the necessary approval.

Where Will the Investment Go?

According to Melbourne Storm, EQT’s investment will focus on several important areas for the club.

Those priorities include strengthening the football program and player pathways, improving the matchday experience for members and supporters, attracting new commercial sponsorships and global partnerships, and continuing to grow rugby league across Victoria.

The club also says the partnership will support its ongoing role within the Victorian community.

For a club that has built a reputation on strong development systems and sustained success, additional resources could provide further opportunities both on and off the field.

The key message coming from Melbourne Storm is that this is about building on the foundations already in place rather than starting again.

Storm chairman Matt Tripp said the club went through a thorough process to find the right partner and believes EQT can help the organisation continue to grow.

EQT’s Alexander Hansen also pointed to Storm’s football culture, leadership and connection with supporters and the Victorian community as key strengths the organisation wants to build upon.

Melbourne Storm has spent decades building one of the strongest football organisations in Australian sport. The challenge now will be to maintain the culture and systems that have driven that success while taking advantage of the resources and opportunities a major global investor can provide.

A Significant Moment for the Storm

The full impact of EQT’s investment will not be known immediately, and the transaction still requires approval from the Australian Rugby League Commission.

But if completed, the deal will represent a significant moment in Melbourne Storm’s history.

The club will retain its established leadership, while gaining a new majority shareholder with global experience and ambitions to invest in its future.

For Storm fans, the immediate message is one of continuity.

For the club itself, however, a new era is about to begin.

Melbourne Storm has built its reputation on success. Now, with EQT preparing to take a majority stake, the next question is just how far the club can grow from here.
