Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc claimed victory at the 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, but the race will be remembered as much for its dramatic ending as the result itself. A late crash and prolonged Safety Car period denied fans a thrilling finish, leaving many frustrated as the race concluded under caution.
Leclerc drove a composed race to secure Ferrari’s first British Grand Prix win of the season, finishing ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell and Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton. For Hamilton, the podium marked his 16th career top three finish at Silverstone, delighting the home crowd despite narrowly missing out on a shot at victory.
The turning point came in the closing stages when Max Verstappen crashed, bringing out the Safety Car. Officials kept the field neutralised for the remainder of the race, resulting in one of Formula One’s rare finishes behind the Safety Car. The decision immediately drew criticism from commentators, teams and fans who were hoping for a green-flag showdown in the final laps.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli appeared destined to fight for victory after starting from pole position and showing impressive pace throughout the weekend. However, a wheel shield issue damaged his Mercedes and dropped him out of contention. Combined with a track limits penalty, the young Italian finished outside the points, allowing his rivals to significantly reduce his championship advantage.
It was also a frustrating afternoon for Australia’s Oscar Piastri. The McLaren driver was caught in a first lap incident involving Liam Lawson, dropping him to the back of the field. Despite battling back through the pack, Piastri could only recover to 11th place and missed out on valuable championship points.
The result strengthens Ferrari’s momentum in both championships, while Mercedes will be left wondering what might have been after Antonelli’s misfortune. Although Leclerc celebrated a memorable victory, debate over the Safety Car finish quickly became the dominant talking point following an eventful afternoon at Formula One’s historic home of Silverstone.
