Australia has ended a 52 year wait for Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s 4x100m relay, producing a brilliant performance to win one of the marquee events of the athletics program.
The team of Lachie Kennedy, Josh Azzopardi, Calab Law and Rohan Browning executed near perfect baton changes before Browning stormed down the home straight to secure victory in 38.07 seconds. Canada claimed silver, while Nigeria rounded out the podium with bronze.
The gold medal is Australia’s first in the men’s 4x100m relay since the 1974 Commonwealth Games, making it a landmark moment for the country’s sprint program.
Australia also enjoyed a dominant night in the women’s mile, completing an incredible clean sweep of the medals. Abbey Caldwell claimed gold after a perfectly timed finishing kick, with Jessica Hull taking silver and Claudia Hollingsworth earning bronze in a memorable all-Australian podium finish.
