Team Australia has fired an early warning shot at the 2026 World Baseball Classic, shutting out Chinese Taipei 3–0 in their tournament opener at the Tokyo Dome.

In a game dominated by pitching and clutch hitting, the Australians delivered when it mattered most, combining timely home runs with a lights out performance on the mound to start their campaign in style.

Pitching Sets the Tone

Left hander Alexander Wells set the tone early, attacking the strike zone and striking out hitters while holding Chinese Taipei scoreless in the opening innings. With Pitch limits in the early rounds the pitching was always going to be key.

From there, the bullpen kept the pressure on. Jack O’Loughlin and Jon Kennedy combined with Wells to complete a three hit shutout, shutting down any late rally hopes from the opposition.  That is Australia’s second shutout in the countries WBC history.

It was a clinical performance from the Aussie pitching staff. Calm, composed and in control throughout the game.

After a tight start where both teams struggled to score, the breakthrough finally came in the fifth inning. Robbie Perkins launched a massive two run home run to put Australia in front and ignite the dugout.

That moment shifted the momentum firmly in Australia’s favour. Later in the game, rising star Travis Bazzana added the icing on the cake with a solo blast to extend the lead to 3–0.

The victory gives Australia a crucial early win in pool play at the World Baseball Classic, a tournament often compared to baseball’s version of the FIFA World Cup, bringing together the best players from around the world.

With powerhouse nations also competing in the pool, every win matters and Australia has put itself in a strong position with this opening result.
