Oscar Piastri has delivered one of his most complete Formula 1 weekends to date only for it to unravel in the final laps thanks to a McLaren strategy call that left the Australian “pretty gutted” after finishing second in Qatar.

Piastri dominated the build up to Sunday’s Grand Prix, winning the Sprint, securing pole position, and controlling the early phases of the race. But when a late safety car opened the door for a cheap pit stop, McLaren hesitated. Rivals including Max Verstappen didn’t.

That split second decision changed everything.

A Championship-Altering Moment

With Verstappen diving into the lane for fresh tyres, Piastri was left exposed on worn rubber. When racing resumed, the Red Bull star pounced, snatching the lead and ultimately the victory a critical blow in the title fight with just one round left.

Piastri didn’t sugar-coat his frustration post-race.

“I drove the best race I could. We just didn’t get it right with the strategy,” he said.
“To be honest, I don’t really know what to say. It hurts.”

The 24-year-old made it clear he had full confidence in the team’s calls throughout the season, but Qatar was the exception, the one that slipped away.

McLaren Under Pressure

McLaren team boss Andrea Stella acknowledged the error, confirming the team misjudged the tyre life and track position risk under the safety car. While Piastri battled admirably to defend the lead, the pace advantage from Verstappen’s newer tyres proved too much to contain.

The fallout?
Piastri drops to third in the championship standings, now chasing both Verstappen and teammate Lando Norris heading into Abu Dhabi’s season finale.

For a driver who had been inching toward a maiden world title, the Qatar result stings even harder than his Las Vegas disqualification a week prior.

Eyes Forward to Abu Dhabi

Despite the heartbreak, Piastri vowed to regroup quickly.

“We’ll fight to the end. Nothing’s finished yet.”

McLaren now faces one of the most intense strategic tests of the season: balancing Norris’ title hopes with Piastri’s, repairing internal confidence after a costly mistake, and ensuring Qatar doesn’t define their season.

For Piastri, the mission is simple — win Abu Dhabi and hope the cards fall his way.

And after the speed he showed all weekend in Qatar, nobody is counting him out.
