Oscar Piastri has re established himself as a force in this year’s championship battle dominating from lights out to the chequered flag to claim a commanding Sprint win in Qatar.
Starting from pole with a blistering final lap that set a new track record at Lusail (1:20.055), Piastri held firm under pressure, keeping rival George Russell at bay and seeing off his own teammate Lando Norris to cross the line ahead.
The result has tightened up the title fight, Piastri now chips into Norris’s lead, the momentum firmly back on McLaren’s side.
Behind the scenes, McLaren’s boss Andrea Stella praised the team’s response to their recent setbacks, saying the rebound began “away from the track.” He reckons the high grip, high speed nature of Lusail suited Piastri’s strong suit but warns rivals could strike back.
Now, all eyes shift to qualifying for the main Grand Prix — the sprint win was huge, but it’s still only part of the story. It is going to be an epic battle to the finish of this years drivers championship.
