A spectacular long-range strike from substitute Charlotte Lancaster has delivered the Newcastle Jets a dramatic 2–1 victory over Sydney FC in A-League Women action at Leichhardt Oval on Tuesday night.
Lancaster, returning to familiar territory after previously playing with APIA Leichhardt, came off the bench to score the decisive goal in the 91st minute, breaking a tense second half deadlock and securing what could prove to be a pivotal three points in Newcastle’s campaign.
With the match appearing destined for a draw after being locked at 1–1 for much of the second half, the 22-year-old seized her moment deep into stoppage time. Picking up possession near halfway, Lancaster drove forward, took the space on offer, and unleashed a stunning strike from more than 25 metres that flew past the Sydney goalkeeper.
Jets captain Cassidy Davis was full of praise for the impact made by the substitutes.
“An amazing strike,” Davis said. “I thought the subs were great today, coming on and making a real impact.
“Charlotte does it at training all the time, so I’m really not surprised.
“It’s nice to get three points, it’s been a hard few weeks.”
First-Half Exchange Sets the Stage
Playing their second of four matches in a 10-day stretch, Newcastle made seven changes following Saturday’s 2–1 loss to Central Coast. Several senior players, including Davis, Melina Ayres and Lauren Allan, returned to the starting XI after being rested during the weekend heatwave.
Sydney struck first in the 18th minute after a costly turnover in midfield. A misplaced pass fell straight to striker Amelia Cassar, who advanced into space before launching a long-range effort that sailed beyond Jets keeper Anna Leat.
Newcastle responded just 11 minutes later through Ayres, who pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area and fired home to level the scores at 1–1.
Both sides created chances before the break in a tightly contested half, with Newcastle holding a slight edge in shots on goal, four to three.
Late Drama Seals the Result
The Jets came close to taking the lead in the 58th minute when striker Haley Johnson struck the post from close range, a chance that would ultimately be her final contribution before being substituted.
Sydney threatened again late, with Newcastle fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty in the 81st minute after a challenge on the edge of the box resulted in only a yellow card and a free kick, which was sent well over the bar.
Lancaster entered the match in the 81st minute and wasted no time making her presence felt, delivering the decisive moment just 10 minutes later. Her goal came only minutes after Sydney had missed by centimetres at the other end, underlining how fine the margins were in the contest.
Defender Claudia Cicco was booked late and will miss Newcastle’s next match due to suspension.
Ladder Implications and What’s Next
Both teams entered the round tied on 10 competition points, sitting ninth and tenth respectively. The win lifts Newcastle into seventh on 13 points, level with sixth-placed Brisbane, at the halfway mark of the season.
Davis acknowledged the importance of capitalising on opportunities as the schedule intensifies.
“We’ve got a lot of games in the next couple of weeks,” she said post-match.
“We’re halfway through now — it’s why we’ve got the squad we’ve got. Everyone has a place and a job to do, and you could see that over the last two games.”
Newcastle now face a tough road trip to Melbourne to take on league leaders Melbourne City on Friday, before returning home to host Adelaide United the following Wednesday.
