Seattle Mariners’ powerhouse catcher Cal Raleigh smashed his 48th home run on Sunday, August 24, 2025, tying the Major League Baseball record for home runs in a season by a catcher—a milestone previously set by Salvador Pérez in 2021.

Raleigh launched the mammoth homer off Oakland Athletics pitcher Jacob López in the first inning—a blast that traveled 448 feet. Of Raleigh’s 48 homers this season, 39 have come while he’s playing catcher, with the remaining nine during his time as a designated hitter.
With this feat, Raleigh now joins a rarefied group of catchers who’ve smacked 40 or more homers in a single season—a list that includes Johnny Bench, Roy Campanella, Todd Hundley, and Mike Piazza, all Hall of Famers.
