The Socceroos have kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in perfect fashion, defeating Türkiye 2-0 in a stunning Group D victory at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

Coming into the clash as underdogs against a highly rated Turkish side, Australia delivered a disciplined defensive performance and made the most of their opportunities in front of goal.

The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute when exciting young star Nestory Irankunda burst forward on a counterattack before calmly finishing past Turkish goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır to hand Australia a shock lead.

Türkiye controlled large periods of possession and created numerous chances throughout the contest, but the Socceroos’ defensive unit stood tall. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced a series of outstanding saves to preserve Australia’s advantage as the pressure mounted.

With Türkiye pushing numbers forward in search of an equaliser, Australia struck again in the 75th minute. Connor Metcalfe unleashed a superb long range effort that found the back of the net, sealing one of the Socceroos’ most memorable World Cup victories in recent years.

The result places Australia in a strong position in Group D and provides a major confidence boost ahead of their next World Cup assignment against host nation USA.

For Tony Popovic’s youthful squad, the win showcased resilience, tactical discipline and the emergence of a new generation of Socceroos talent on football’s biggest stage.
