Under a deluge at Go Media Stadium, Newcastle Jets stunned A-League leaders Auckland FC, handing the Black Knights their first defeat of the 2025–26 season with a 2–1 win.
Newcastle struck lightning fast. Just three minutes in, a mis cleared cross from Daniel Wilmering landed at the feet of Will Dobson and he buried it, crashing the net to silence the home crowd.
Auckland responded in the 14th minute through Louis Verstraete, levelling the score and raising hopes among the locals. But the lead proved short lived. In the 42nd minute, Jets midfielder Lachlan Rose latched onto a pass from Dobson and fired home restoring Newcastle’s advantage.
Rain poured down throughout the second half, turning pitch conditions treacherous and play disjointed. Auckland pressed for an equaliser, but the Jets’ defence held firm, and the wet surface played havoc with passing and positioning.
As the A-League season hurtles on, tonight’s upset proves one thing, in football rain, defence, and a moment of ruthlessness can upend even the best laid plans.
