The 2025 Supercars season came to a head in Adelaide and what a head turner it was. With the season finale under the belt of the 2025 BP Adelaide Grand Final, Matt Payne took the race win, but it was Chaz Mostert’s second place finish that delivered him a maiden championship. For Ford, it was the brand’s first drivers’ crown in the Gen3 era and for Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU), their first title since the team’s glory days in 2002.
What should have been a clean finale quickly spiralled into chaos. On the very first lap, a clash between WAU’s Ryan Wood and title leader Broc Feeney sent Feeney spinning, dropping him to the back of the pack. Wood was hit with a 15-second time penalty for the incident.
Feeney, who had dominated the season with the most wins and poles, tried to fight back but further misfortune intervened. A pit stop wheel delay cost him valuable time, and by mid-race, an engine misfire began to sap his pace lap after lap. By the final laps, any realistic shot at the championship had vanished.
In contrast, Mostert, though under pressure, navigated the rough waters, held his nerve, and when it mattered, put in the result to be crowned 2025 champion.
For Feeney, it was a cruel end to what had been a stellar campaign, 14 race wins, a record 19 pole positions, and long time championship leadership undone in a single chaotic Sunday.
He didn’t hide his anguish. In a heartfelt post race interview, Feeney, visibly emotional, congratulated Mostert, thanked his team and supporters, and reflected on the unpredictable nature of the new finals style championship format.
For Mostert, patient, persistent, and perhaps underrated. The triumph is sweet vindication. After years of near misses (best previous championship finish third), he finally has the crown. For WAU — forsaking its Holden Racing Team legacy days it is a return to glory with a bold new chapter.
