Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets shared the points in a fiery opening F3 Derby of the 2026–27 A-League Men season, with a late own goal denying the Mariners victory at Polytec Stadium on Saturday night.
John Hutchinson’s return as Central Coast head coach began with a 2–2 draw against Newcastle in a contest that featured four goals, two penalties and a heated first-half confrontation.
The Mariners led twice, but Newcastle fought back on both occasions to leave Gosford with a point.
Auglah Gives Mariners Early Advantage
Central Coast made the most of their early opportunity when Ali Auglah converted a penalty in the 11th minute.
Auglah had driven into the Newcastle penalty area before drawing the foul that led to the spot kick. He converted to give the home side a 1–0 lead.
The Mariners carried that advantage into half time, despite a competitive opening period that saw both sides produce chances.
Tensions boiled over in the 41st minute following a confrontation between Auglah and Newcastle captain Max Burgess. Players from both teams became involved before the situation settled, with both Auglah and Burgess shown yellow cards.
Jets Respond After the Break
Newcastle wasted little time restoring parity in the second half.
Patrick Wood scored in the 49th minute after Joe Shaughnessy directed Joe Lolley’s cross back into the danger area. Wood finished to bring the Jets level at 1–1.
The Mariners responded in the 60th minute when Oliver Lavale converted a second penalty. The spot kick, awarded after Newcastle goalkeeper James Delianov brought Lavale down, restored Central Coast’s lead at 2–1.
With the Mariners ahead, Hutchinson’s side appeared on course to claim a significant opening-round result against the defending minor premiers.
Late Own Goal Denies Central Coast
The decisive moment arrived in the 78th minute.
Newcastle’s corner created pressure inside the Mariners’ penalty area, and Lavale inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting to deal with the delivery.
The own goal levelled the score at 2–2 and handed Newcastle a way back into the contest.
Despite further efforts from both teams, neither side found a winning goal, and the opening derby of the new campaign finished all square.
Hutchinson Begins His New Chapter
The draw marked the beginning of Hutchinson’s latest chapter with the Mariners. A former club captain, he helped lead Central Coast to their inaugural A-League championship in 2013.
His task now is to build a competitive side following a ninth-place finish last season.
The opening performance offered encouragement, with Central Coast scoring twice and taking the lead on two occasions. However, conceding the equaliser through a late own goal meant the Mariners could not turn that effort into three points.
For Newcastle, the result provided a point after twice falling behind. The Jets began their premiership defence following a significant off-season turnover, with 13 players departing the club.
An Early Test for Both Rivals
The 2–2 result gives both teams something to build on as the 2026–27 season gets underway.
Central Coast demonstrated their ability to create scoring opportunities and respond after conceding, while Newcastle showed resilience to recover from two deficits.
For Hutchinson, the focus will now turn to improving consistency and converting competitive performances into wins. Newcastle, meanwhile, will look to build momentum as they continue their title defence.
The opening F3 Derby delivered drama from start to finish, ensuring the rivalry has once again provided an early talking point in Australian football.
