Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has revealed he tested positive for cocaine during an ATP 250 tournament in Mallorca, Spain, in June.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from competing and coaching since August 4, following confirmation of the positive test for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.
Kyrgios addressed the situation publicly, admitting he had made a “huge mistake” and taking full responsibility for the failed test. He apologised to his fans, family, sponsors and young supporters.
The 31-year-old has the right to appeal the suspension but, according to the ITIA, has not done so. He has also announced that he will step away from public life for 28 days to focus on getting himself back on track.
The suspension adds another difficult chapter to Kyrgios’ recent career, which has been heavily affected by injuries and limited time on court.
